Happy Sunday. I’ve had a fruitful and eventful couple of days gigging and engaging with my art, but nevertheless, this week I bring you another song spotlight from my new album, Hope on the Horizon. I love the way this song came about, because it has serendipity written all over it. One afternoon, I was noodling around on my guitar while hanging out with my wife and sister-in-law. I started playing what eventually became – and, if you’ve listened to the song or seen me play it live, you might recognise it as – the guitar melody played over the chorus. For reasons I can’t explain, I found myself doing this over and over for several minutes, at which point my sister-in-law said, as I was playing it she could just hear the phrase “I see you” . I didn’t make much of it at that moment, but over the next few days I decided to see where the idea would take me, and that led me to the eventual lyrics and structure of the song.
It’s been a couple of years now since I wrote it, but having played it quite a few times at gigs recently, I’ve been reflecting on the lyrics and sentiment of the song, and I feel like it’s even more relevant now than it was when I wrote it. To me, the song is about having a safe place to take solace, and being that safe place for your loved ones in troubling times. I’d love to hear what the song means to you.
As always, I'm sharing the lyrics here in line with the philosophy (and safe in the knowledge) that my song lyrics can stand alone as poetry, but I can do you one better, because you can now listen to the entire album, or just this track. I'd love to know what you think of the lyrics below, and the album when you get a chance to listen. And with all that said, I give you, I See You.
1 It’s yet another sombre Sunday night The world, it seems, can get nothing right I turn on the news, nothing good in sight But it's alright, it's alright Here we stand In troubled land Oh darling, solid rock or quicksand Just hold my hand, cause… I see you 2 That Monday feeling has come around again It's brought with it lots of clouds and rain Try as we might to shake it, it's all in vain But it's okay, at the end of the day… Here and now Is all we have When life's problems, when they come around Just hold me tight, cause… I see you
