Happy Sunday. This week I'm back with a song spotlight for one of my favourite songs on my new album, Hope on the Horizon. One of the things I love about this song – called Promise of, as in promise of tomorrow – is its simplicity. I wrote it one winter afternoon after spending an unhealthy amount of time consuming the news and wondering why there were so many bad things happening around the world. With a bit of fortuitous metacognition, I recognised my despair and resolved to do something about it, and the only thing I could come up with in that moment was a dream of a better future, one that holds promise.
I didn't realise it at the time, but the feeling I'd just captured in the song echoed those in another one I'd previously written, called A Better Day, which, as it happens, is the last song spotlight I shared on this blog. There was no doubt in my mind that both songs belonged on the album that was just coming together, which eventually became Hope on the Horizon.
As always, I'm sharing the lyrics here in line with the philosophy (and safe in the knowledge) that my song lyrics can stand alone as poetry, but I can do you one better, because you can now listen to the entire album, or just this track. I'd love to know what you think of the lyrics below, and the album when you get a chance to listen. And with all that said, I give you, Promise Of.
I’ve been dreaming Of a day when I’m no longer feeling All the things that keep me reeling And wishing the pain, and the heartache away I’m dreaming of… The promise of tomorrow Cause I find myself Running on a path that knows no end That's wide as a continental shelf Leading me nowhere, with nothing, nothing but… The promise of tomorrow I remember a time so simple Way back when When life was void of wrinkles And the dreams, of boys and men, held the promise of tomorrow The promise of tomorrow
My new album, Hope on the Horizon, is out everywhere now. Not a fan of streaming and want to support my music? You can download a digital version or buy a CD now here. Thank you for listening, spreading the word, and reaching out to share your thoughts. I appreciate it. Have a great week.
P.S.: There’ll be no newsletter next week as I’m taking a little time off. Rest assured, I’ll be back in your inbox the week after.
