…things I've learned and/or experienced recently, because we need a break from the news
A few weeks ago. I ended an essay about hope with a list of things that have brought me hope recently. It seemed to go down well, and I had a good time writing it, so I figured, why not do it again? So this week I'm back with a few more things that have given me hope, brought me joy, made me happy, and renewed my faith in humanity.
- A few months ago, I joined a writing group on a whim, and I'm so glad I did. It's been nice to connect with creatives, to learn about others’ writing approach and to get feedback on my writing. It's also made me thankful for third spaces, communities with shared interests, and the opportunity to engage with humans offline, in the real world. The feedback I receive on my short stories week to week continues to buoy me and spur me on to keep on writing.
- A few weeks ago, I played a lovely gig as the opening act for a jazz band. It was a wholesome evening, the audience were attentive and warm, and the band was excellent. And young. I highlight their youth because it's not often that I come across young folks (or those younger than me) on my local scene who have a keen interest in jazz and are good at it too.
- I recently attended and performed at a community street party, the first I've ever been to, and I absolutely loved it. It was nice to see people of all creeds coming together the way neighbours should, and it was nice to spend a few hours soaking up the atmosphere, as it represented the antithesis of the increasingly polarised world that exists online. Even my performance at the event was a testament to community and teamwork, because the other musicians who took to the stage before me were willing to step in to resolve the technical issues we encountered. They helped me get the technical equipment up and running, and my performance just wouldn't have been possible without them.
- There have been a spate of Oasis concerts this summer, and while it's not my thing, it's been nice to see how the band's reunion has brought people together. The joy and merriment in the air have been palpable, as tens of thousands of people have come together to celebrate a band that means so much to them. It's almost as if music has the power to bring people together.
- Last month I had a short story published alongside some lovely pieces of prose and poetry on the theme of resistance. I'm especially thankful for the folks who put all their time and effort into running grassroots art and creative communities. From those who curate and edit these publications, to those who put on events, these folks are the heartbeats of local art scenes everywhere.
- Live music. Sensing a theme yet? It's been lovely attending, playing, and engaging with music and musicians. I sometimes joke that if I wasn't a gigging musician I'd hardly ever leave the house for shared spaces. I've made many friends through live music over the years, and it's nice to run into folks randomly and catch up on all things music and life after months or years apart. On a related note, in-person conversations with like-minded people, highly underrated.
- Making a list of nice things I'm thankful for. It never fails to cheer me up, and it always reminds me that there's so much good around, despite what's on the news. We should do it more often. Highly recommended.
I’ll leave this here for now. Hope you have a wonderful week, and if you feel so inclined, please share what’s brought you hope this week.
